While the current pandemic is anxiety-inducing for anyone, it is especially so for parents with young children! While the statistics concerning children and COVID-19 are favorable, it is not worth the risk of being careless with their health, or that of their grandparents and loved ones! If you are especially concerned about your child’s health with regard to COVID-19, we would be happy to help alleviate your anxiety with rapid COVID-19 testing at Night Lite Pediatrics.
How accurate is the rapid COVID-19 test?
While the most accurate test for COVID-19 is the molecular test, also known as the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test, it takes quite some time before the results are available. With our in-house rapid COVID-19 tests at Night Lite Pediatrics, we can promise results that match those of a PCR test approximately 96 percent of the time! As such, our rapid COVID-19 tests are nearly as accurate as PCR tests while also providing those results to our patients in a matter of minutes.
How does rapid COVID-19 testing work?
If you have ever had a rapid strep test for strep throat, rapid COVID-19 testing is based on similar technology. The rapid COVID-19 test relies on a nasal swab taken from the patient. The mucus samples from the swab are then placed on a testing strip. If the COVID-19 antigen is present in the samples, they will bind to specific antibodies that are fixed on the strip, which will then generate a visually detectable reaction. This reaction usually occurs within 30 minutes of taking the nasal swab. The rapid COVID-19 test detects the antigen with the highest accuracy when the virus is in the replication process, meaning that it is best used to detect the virus in the early stages.
What should I expect for my child with a rapid COVID-19 test at Night Lite Pediatrics?
If you suspect that your child might be infected with COVID-19, you can bring them to Night Lite Pediatrics without any referral or appointment. Both you and your child will be asked to wear a mask upon arrival. We are also only allowing one parent to attend their child’s visit to our clinic. Due to limited testing quantities and the high demand for COVID-19 testing, you may experience up to two to three hours of wait time before you can get tested. In order to reduce traffic in our building and adhere to social distancing guidelines, we kindly ask that you remain in your vehicle during this time. When we are ready to see your child, we will either call you or come to your car to take your child with us to a sterilized room where a nurse will perform a nasal swab with all of the necessary personal protective equipment (PPE). The test will be quick and painless. When the test is completed, they can return to you, and we will call you with the results.

When will results come back for a rapid COVID-19 test?
With the rapid COVID-19 test, you can expect results back within one to two hours of getting tested. However, rapid COVID-19 tests are more reliable with positive results. As such, if you receive a negative result, it may need to be confirmed by a molecular test, which may take a couple of days to occur.
