What is a complete blood count (CBC)?
A blood test is testing a sample of blood for things like glucose levels, hemoglobin levels, or white blood cell levels in order to detect a certain health issue. A blood test can also help a doctor see how well an organ, like the liver, is functioning. A complete blood count is a kind of blood test that checks for the levels of different types of cells. More specifically, the CBC measures:
- White blood cells which help fight infections
- Red blood cells which move oxygen throughout the body
- Platelets which help blood clot
A CBC might be done during a routine checkup or if a child isn’t feeling well.
Blood Differential Test
A CBC with differential (also known as a blood cell count with differential) can help a doctor diagnose or monitor a certain health condition like anemia or an infection.
What’s the procedure for a CBC?
First, make sure you ask the professional you’ll be seeing about the proper way to prepare for a CBC. Depending on whether another test needs to be done too, your child may have to fast for a while beforehand. There are other details you should be clear on too, like whether you’ll be able to stay with your child during the procedure (you’ll likely be able to). Consider asking the healthcare provider what to expect, how to prepare, and how to comfort your child before and during the procedure.
During the actual procedure, a health professional may:
- Clean the injection site
- Put an elastic band around and above the area
- Insert a needle into a vein in the area
- Pull the sample of blood into a syringe or vial
- Take off the band and remove the needle
- Cover the area with taped cotton or a bandage
For a baby, the procedure is a bit different. After cleansing the area, the professional may prick the baby’s heel with a tiny needle or lancet and collect a tiny sample.
After the procedure, there may be some minor bruising that typically goes away after just a few days.
When do CBC results become ready?
The sample taken is processed by a machine, and it may be a few hours or a day until the results are ready. If the results indicate an issue, the doctor might order another test.
