What is a walk-in clinic?
Walk-in medical healthcare clinics were initially created and intended to serve patients and families who are uninsured or underinsured. They work diligently to provide a more affordable, but still effective, treatment option for the basic medical services that are also offered at the local hospital emergency room or urgent care clinic. Walk-in clinics are set up nicely to be able to offer treatment options for very common, but non-life-threatening medical conditions. Some of these conditions can include very minor injuries such as burns, sprains and minor infections like bladder infections, pink eye, sinus infections, sore throat, skin rashes and upset stomach.
Most walk-in clinics will also offer vaccinations and immunizations, pregnancy tests and annual routine physicals. They truly emphasize on convenience, and the care that is offered is on a first-come/first-served basis. They do not typically take appointments.
Will my insurance cover my urgent care or walk-in clinic visit?
The majority of health insurance companies will pay a portion of the cost of going to a walk-in clinic or urgent care clinic for healthcare treatment. It is likely that they will cover all, or some, of the costs because the costs are typically much less than that of an unnecessary visit to a hospital emergency room. But however, there are some insurance companies with whom do not cover these costs, so therefore, it is very wise to consult with the insurance provider beforehand to find out under what conditions they will pay for out-of-network healthcare services. It is also important to find out how much out-of-pocket expenses will be. Before a minor emergency strikes and you and your family are in need of an urgent care clinic or walk-in clinic, it is important to find one that is near you and call to find out if they accept your insurance.
